condensation on water cooled condenser:
water cooled condenser water is a cooling medium. The vapors flow through the shell chamber from the bottom to the top and are condensed on the horizontal tubes through which cooling water is flowing. To avoid short circuit flows a separating baffle plate must be installed. The condensate running from the tubes is collected in the bottom and is returned to the column as reflux or taken out as distillate product.
Advantage:
- low holdup in distillate cycle and therefore absolutely necessary in batch distillations
- simple construction with the gas outlet on the top out most and coldest point
- high boiling components are washed back by the later condensing light boiling components
